Chest MD #4 ~ Change of Plans!

Forgive me as I may be a little slow on this. I'm looking in my MED3 book and in the back under the Medical Dept. Supply Catalog 1941, it list the Med #4 as 97575 and Chest MD #4 fits inside chest field plan # 97535, correct?? If so, to make one, I need a foot locker and build a Chest #4 to fit inside of it, correct? Or am I off base here?

Well I must have confused you all with my question so I'll try this another way. My understanding is the Chest, MD #4 was designed to fit inside the Chest, field Plain, correct? If that is correct, I was thinking of taking a foot locker, making it a chest, field plain and building a Chest MD #4 to fit it. Does that sound acceptable or am I off base with my idea?

I have an interest in this chest because I have the folding table with canvas chairs already and would like to complete the 'kit' by having the MD #4 chest.

Thoughts on the idea????

Hi Nicholas,

You are indeed correct in thinking that the MD # 4 Chest fits inside the Chest, Field, Plain, Empty. As for converting a footlocker, I'm not sure how it could be done. Many of the footlockers that I have seen are lower than the Chest, Field, Plain and so converting one into a Med Chest could prove difficult.

I think that perhaps docdean is your best source for an answer on this, as he really does seem to know his stuff about the chests.

Hope that helps somewhat Nicholas, and do keep us posted on how the project materialises.

Many thanks,

If you allow, I'll second Ben's remark on the footlocker depth. I did a conversion of a footlocker into Med#1, and am fairly happy with it, however it is probably a good 6" shallower that it looks it should be. I'm working on the inserts for inside it, and I'm thinking man these aren't gonna be real big. I mean, it'll be good enough for me, and chances are 98% of the people who even bother to look at my med display won't know they're not "correct". Till I come across a couple nice #1s at the flea market for $15, they'll work for me. Maybe DocDean can give you a better idea of the dimensions of these real chests.

Yes, the MD series of chests are shorter and taller than the footlockers are. I'll go out in the morning and measure one of the MD's for you. If the table set will fit in the chest though, I don't see a reason why you can't adapt a footlocker as a set though. As previously stated in another post who is going to know the difference as long as it looks right?!

I have yet to come across a real chest so I figured I can make one for now so that I can have the set. I figure as long as none of you guys are around, no one around here would ever know!!! :P :P

Well I went out tonight and pulled the folding table out and a foot locker. The table will fit inside the lid of the footlocker no problem. The lid is about one inch to short so for the MD chest #4 to fit it will only be about 8 inches deep. What I can tell by the pictures in the MED3 book, it looks like the MD 4 is about 12 inches deep maybe a tad more.

Anyone have the measurements of the Chest MD #4 handy?

Okay, I have two of the MD series chests and both were measured with the same results they are as follows:

E X T E R I O R Measurements

29" long

15" tall

17" wide

Lid is 4" tall

The MD Series chests were all the same whether it was the MD1 or the MD 61 the only thing that changed about them were the contents / insert sets. Hope that helps.

Okay guys, change of plans, instead I plan on building just the Chest MD #4 to original specs. Does anyone know the measurements of the MD #4? I have an idea of the length and width of the chest but not the depth of it.

Any ideas?
