325th GIR Medical Detachment ambulance

Mon Dec 01, 2008 04:04

Looking for any pictures of the 325th GIR Medical Detachment using WC-54 ambulances.
I got info from the 82nd airborne museum saying they used them but they have no pictures.

In the Doc McIlvoy book there's a picture of a 505th PIR Medical Detachment WC-54 ambulance, page 144 look at bumper markings.

And if there are any pictures of WC-54 ambulances used by the 307th Airborne Medical Company.

thanks

Hi,
Never take anything for granted - and please don't be shy and consult our webpages ! It's all there ...
As per T/O & Es Medical Detachments had NO Ambulances . Furthermore, again as per official T/O & Es, Glider Infantry Regiments + Parachute Infantry Regiments + Airborne Medical Companies, had NO Ambulances either !
The ONLY units that were provided with Ambulances (Dodge 3/4-Ton Trucks) were the Collecting Companies pertaining to the Medical Battalion (however the Abn Div only had a single Abn Med Co) .
When you mention the Ambulance illustrated in Mike DT's Book re Doc McIlvoy, this MUST be an exception ! Not everyone followed the AR and T/O & Es, and I guess Airborne personnel must have been anxious to try and get hold of extra vehicles, one way or another ... you should not consider this to be the norm (markings too are not consistent with AR)

That's what I thought to but The TO&E PIR Dec. 1944 I got shows when it gets to the Med. Detachment it has 2 driver ambulance and 2 trucks 3/4 ton ambulance.
The GIR one Dec. 1944 doesn't have them.
I don't know where they were copied from.

If you have one of TO&E PIR Dec. 1944 take a look and let me know if it the same.

thanks

Hi,
I must apologize - you're absolutely right ! There is some confusion however ...
T/O 7-31 Prcht Inf Regt , dated 17 Feb 42 INDEED indicates 2 x 3/4-Ton Ambulance Trucks . This T/O was corrected on 10 Jul 44 and still reflects the 2 Ambulances (I keep on wondering how these got supplied to the frontlines ?) .
I noted that in some cases organic transportation of an Airborne Division indicates 2 x Ambulances for the Serv Co (ref T/O 7-33 of 17 Feb 42) , while T/O 7-31T , dated 16 Dec 44 allows 2 Ambulances for the Med Det !
I can however re-confirm that T/O 7-51 Gli Inf Regt , dated 5 Sep 42 allows NO Ambulances . As already pointed out , T/O 8-37 Abn Med Co dated 5 Sep 42 mentions NO Ambulances either .
All the best , Alain :)
