[REF] Latern Set Box

Mon Mar 05, 2007 03:44

I have located a guy here in the states who is willing to build the Lantern Set Boxes. Having never seen a real one aside from photos, does anyone have good photos, measurements of the box that housed the set? I have one from the MED 3 Catalog, but that is all. If anyone else is interested in ordering one I can provide you the contact info. No price yet as I need the dimensions first!

Thanks in advance.

Roger,

Thanks for your question. I have been through the various files and photographs that I have, and have dug out the ones which feature lantern crates. I'm afraid they are few and far between, although I suspect that they may come in useufl, as I think it may be possible to scale the items from some of the pictures.

Kindly let me know. Here follows the pictures:

Image
I think that the item near the trailer wheel is a lantern set.

This image could be used for scaling the approximate sizes of the crate.

I'm afraid these were all I could find. I hope that someone is able to help you further with this query, and I would be most interested to see how the project turns out.

Many thanks,
Ben

I was able to secure the dimensions of the lantern crate and have forwarded it to the vendor. We'll see what he says for prices now. I'll keep the group posted.

Guys, I was able to secure proper dimensions for the lantern crate and supply them to the vendor, Steve, at "Wooden WW2". He says he will make them for $30 ea, which seems to me a great price. They will be supplied in plain wood, with front stencilled "MD-USA". The only hitch is that he can't locate the weird latch so this will be subsituted with something else. He is getting wood for them pretty quick and if you want in on this build he needs your orders by monday 3/ 12. Steve can be reached at:

I have ordered one of these crates from Steve and am in the midst of procuring the items to fill the crate. I have a copy of the MED 3 catalog but do not have a copy of the MED 6 catalog that outlines the individual components of the kit. The plate located in the MED 3 catalog for the lantern set indicates a 1/2 gallon can of kersone, two lanterns, two dark colored globes and one white globe. The MED 3 catalog indicates that there are only green or white globes available as individual equipment. Can someone confirm the original lantern set contained two green globes as the dark globes pictured in MED 3?

Thanks in advance!

Perfect Ben! Thanks!

As far as the different lanterns, my copy of MED3 has a good itemized listing of lanterns available. Thank you anyway for the suggestion though.

Off topic for just a second, where is a good source for either a copy, text, reprint or original of MED6? I have not been able to locate one for some time.

DocDean, I am not sure if this is the latch needed, but, if it is, here is a link to one on E-bay. I thought you might be interested in this:

Saw the photos of the lantern crates today and they look great I think. The only draw back was the supplier wasn't able to source the latch hardware, it is a strange design with a bale and post it looks like. He instead used a latch, the nice thing is that it can be secured so it doesn't fly open.

Wow, wow and more wow! My crate showed up on my front doorstep this afternoon and I must say that I am very, very satisfied with the craftsmanship and crate! Just beautiful! Now I just need to wait for my W.T. Kirkman lantern order to show up and I will be set!

The two I ordered arrived today and they look just like the above pictured crate and I'm quite happy with the purchase!

In looking for lantern box photos, I see DocDean posted a photo a while ago that shows perhaps an older style lantern box:

Look in the upper center of the photo. the two smaller containers would probably hold the fuel can, and spare parts.

Hi Dave,

Many thanks for kindly sharing the photograph. It certainly is an interesting one, and I have never seen that variation of Lantern Crate before. I have recently been able to purchase an original example (which lacks the lid) and will post some photographs of this for you tomorrow. Are there any details in particular that you're looking for?

Thanks,
Ben :)
