Can anybody identify these containers as US Army Medical Dept. items? Possibly #97660/9766000 container
No. 2: 2 1/4" x 2 1/2".(Although these measure 2 1/2" x 2 1/2") Round, with screw cap. Hard rubber or plastic. The photocopy of the original mimeograph in my copy of the MED 3 catalog is just a black shape! Your help will be greatly appreciated. I am hoping against hope! Thank you, Eric

Hello Eric,

As far as I know, you're quite right. This item does indeed represent Container No. 2 (Item # 9766000), although I do not have any official documentation, or indeed better quality photographs of an original. The photograph that is shown in the 1941 Medical Department Supply Catalog is the only reference I have for this item.

Here are some images which show the item I have in my collection:

Kind regards,
Ben. :)

Thank you very much Ben. Your example is exactly the same: makers marks(I assume) and numbers. The two I have are numbered 23 & 34, I don't know their significance? Do you have an idea of their intended contents and or where they would have been used? Very Gratefully, Eric

Eric,

Yes, there is a manufacturer's marking on the lid as well as a number (in this case, simply "3").

Regarding their potential usage, I have checked the 1942, 1943 and 1944 editions of the Medical Supply Catalog, and can confirm that Container No. 2 appears to have been a component part of the Chest, Medical Pack, "A", Complete (Item # 97615 / 9761500). Below are copies from the Catalogs showing the entry, along with its contents. I have also included a photograph of the Medical Pack "A" Chest for further reference.

I hope that the above information is of some use to you.

Thank you and kind regards,
Ben.
