I found a reference to an army contyract for this cart - issued & cancelled in Nov 1965 - so they were being procured prior to that point.

Tenth,

Thanks for the Patent Number. I looked it up, and for some reason that Patent # appears to have been filed for a "Support for Brushes and Like Articles", with unfortunately no reference to the closing system used on the Food Cabinets.

For reference here is the drawing and first page for that Patent Number (i.e. 2,278,650):

Thanks for data Tenth, and very nic find on the Food Insert.

Thanks guys,
Ben

that doesn't look like the container we are looking for! That was the patent number I found for Drinkwater Patent Food Container - oops! Bad info!

I guess we''ll keep looking!

I had a look around for other Drinkwater Patents (issued between 1-41 to 1-45), and the only matches that I could find were as follows:
#2278650 - SUPPORT FOR BRUSHES AND LIKE ARTICLES
    #2319725 - DUSTLESS ASH RECEIVER
    #2319589 - FOOD SERVICE TRUCK
    #2233201 - CHAIR SEAT
Unforutnately #2319589 does not have any mention to the closure system on the Med. Dept. Food Cabinet, so perhaps we need to have another look around.

Thanks for your help,
Ben

Ben - you might explore that, because the Army item # I quoted earlier is for a food service cart (or truck) - maybe the patent was for the whole system?

Tenth,

I took a look at the Food Truck patent drawings, and it doesn't really bear resemblance to the Med. Dept. ones that we are looking for. I also had a search around to see what else I could find, but to no avail.

Thanks,
Ben

Sorry to keep bumping this thread guys, but I just wondered whether or not anyone on here had managed to note down the measurements and take some photographs of the closure system at a past re-enactment?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Ben :)

Ben,

I am so sorry! I know that I told you some time ago that I would do this a long time ago and simply haven't! I have been busy, busy and mo' busy! (Just had our third baby!) I am, however, on family leave this weekend and if you email me several reminders this week, I am sure I will be able to get you what you need! Later!

Todd,

Thanks for your post, and I can totally appreciate your lack of spare time with the new arrival (congratulations by the way), and that'd be great if you could get the details for me next weekend.

I'll send you a reminder nearer the time.

Thanks again,
Ben

I was able to get into my Medical Ben Hur today and unpack it to get to the food box located on the bottom....My appologies for the delay.

The following are pictures of the bucket latch. Being from the "Colonies" I could not find my tape measure with metric indicators so I had to use an imperial tape.

The latches are made of 3/32 steel rod (notice the rust). The inside clearance dimension is 1/2 inch on all (pic #5). The length of the side which hooks to the boss is 3/4 of an inch (pic #4). The overall length of the latch on the side oposite the mount is 7/8 of an inch (pic 3).

I left the tub out so I can take any further images needed. (Note these are reduced to expedite loading. If you need hi-res pleas email me).

Hi Bill,

Thanks for those pictures, that's a great help. I'd also be most interested in seeing the photographs of the closure on outer chest too, if that's at all possible?

Thanks again and kind regards,
Ben

Hi Todd and Bill,

Did either of you manage to get some images and dimensions of the closing mechanism on the cabinet itself? If so, could you please send them over to my email (ben@med-dept.com).

Advanced thanks, and kind regards,
Ben

After months of waiting, I think I might finally have what you are looking for Ben. Sorry for the poor quality. My personal Digi Cam = Not so good and the work one is, well, at work!

Hi Todd,

That's excellent indeed. Thanks for taking the time to shoot the measurements and closures. It really is most gratefully received indeed.

Thanks again for taking the time to gather the information, and I can now sort the closure out for my cabinet.

Thanks, and take care,
Ben
