I have one of these cabinets in unissued condition as well. Most of the containers are still wrapped in paper. If anyone is interested, there is one on eBay right now. Not mine so I can't help out any further.

With all the cabinets in the hands of collectors, either they really aren't that rare OR the Army hated them

C.M. Drinkwater of chicago was indeed a contractor during WWII they had various contracts from 1942 thru to 1945 all for the medical department mostly food carts and kitchen equipment.

Thought I'd bring this is one back to the top since I have re-acquired my Food Cabinet...
I found this one locally about 25 years ago and sold it to a friend shortly after.
He carried it in his Dodge Ambulance as a food container to attend MV meetings and such...
Now that he has sold the Dodge, I have bought the cabinet back from him....

Anyway here are some pictures, the food containers are different from the ones shown above and are all marked on the bottom and the lids:

SWARTZBAUCH MFG CO
TOLEDO OHIO

No idea what the marking 29 means, but since I'm a 29th Division buff, it's a nice touch...
The number is painted in red on all four sides...

Has anyone come up with dating this type of inner container???

Thanks,

Johan

Hello all,

I've just found this "Food Cabinet"...

Image

Image

It's in good condition except some rust and the lock of the cabinet cover. There are 5 cans ( 3 size A and 2 size B). Both size B and 1 size A are DRINKWATER Chicago, the 2 other size A are SWARTZBAUGH Toledo Ohio. But all covers are Drinkwater, so 2 of them can't be locked on the can.

One of the size A is marked "Marmalade" with white paint.

I think it's an interisting item, and hope this provide information about the subject.

If you're referring to pictures of the Food Cabinets in actual use, at the 203rd General Hospital in the Paris Region, c. 9/44-7/45, will repost. One photo shows the kitchen staff at dietician, with a food cabinet visible on a cart at the left, as well as the inner boxes in several locations. Another photo shows a kitchen staff member heating the food cabinets with steam, to keep the food hot for transport to the wards.
