War Department, Medical ID Card (laminated)

Sat Sep 26, 2009 12:46

Hi Everyone,
General call for specific information :

You all know the War Department, Certificate of Identity for Military and Civilian Protected Personnel, i.e. the second pattern Medical Department I.D. Card (laminated) . I'm trying to track down the specific date (year) when this second version was effectively introduced. Would those of you who have such item in their collection be prepared to indicate the following data :
[b]Date Issued > day/month/year (see obverse side bottom left) and
[b] Identification No. > prefix letter + digits/numbers (see reverse side bottom left) .

Should you wish to add a good illustration, they're more than welcome too .

Sincere thanks for your help and kind regards to all .

Seeing a laminated type issued in June 1944, and having a first pattern issued July 1944, it proofs that at least for some time both models were issued simultaneously..

Surprisingly I realize that every of the above shown ID cards have Identification No.s starting with the same "R" block letter. Does anybody know if every alphabetic letter has been used or maybe only a few as a substitute for some different issuing offices/ or so?

J.B.,
I believe Alain is currently collating the data, but the initial findings would indicate that there was NOT an alphabetical sequence, but rather only certain prefixes that were used.
Thanks,
Ben :)

Hi J.B.,
I'm still trying to collect as many data as possible - hopefully some more INPUTS will be received !

From what I know, and the info available in my files, there was indeed no 'alphabetical' sequence . Quite a few cards dated and distributed in one and the same period show numbers of digits with a different prefix-letter !

I have proof of THREE different prefix-letters (clearly stamped on cards) which are R - S - T .
As far as dates are concerned, the earliest date stamped on the second pattern (laminated) "Certificate of Identity to be Issued to Military and Civilian Protected Personnel" appears to be 8 June 1944 - and the latest is 29 June 1945 .

Alain

Alain,
I am with you. All files and cards, which I found while browsing the web the last days, are always stamped with R, S or T prefixes.
I also searched for Geneva Convention brassards, as their back side stampings are related with the ID cards numbers. All of these armbands, either originals or professional copies do have the prefix M . Does that mean, that only the cards serial numbers are stamped on for identification, in combination with the M?
Questions over questions - I am looking forward to your final conclusion.

Greetings, J.B.

Hi J.B.,
Noted your comments .
Unfortunately I cannot yet try, let alone conclude what really happened during WW2 , and whether there were some procedures or regulations related to the use of subject cards .
I really would like MORE inputs, unfortunately some of our Forum members don't seem to be very much motivated to participate in this kind of "survey" .

I have been able to collate only a limited number of these "Certificates of Identity issued to Military and Civilian Protected Personnel" - in total I only have 22 I.D. cards ... which I think is much too little to attempt a comparative study .

Let's hope that MORE inputs will be received !

Hi Everyone ,
I just found another I.D. card, second pattern, laminated, dated 31 MAY 1944 !

How about that ? That looks rather early , doesn't it ?

C'mon US WW2 COLLECTORS - there must be MORE I.D. Cards in your possession !
Don't let us down ...

Thanks ,
Alain :?
