The forgotten wreck

Mon Jan 16, 2012 15:08

Hi all
last year (when I was of line) I took a little hop across the pond and another over to O'ahu. while at Pearl Harbour we had an escorted tour to the USS Utah Memorial. Accsess to to memorial is restricted as Ford Island is still a active base

The USS Utah was a WW1 battleship converted to a target ship and was moored on the north east side of Ford Island, known as Carrier row. When the first wave of Japanese aircraft arrived over Pearl harbour the Utah was misstaken for a carrier and was one of the first ship hit by torpedos, the ship listed an sank quickly trapping around fifty men below decks. unable to resue the men the USS Utah became their grave.

Attemps were made to raise the wreck, as the ship had rolled onto her side, steel cables were attached to the hull and winches an the island in order to right her , instead of rolling the ship upright the Utah slid along the bottom of the harbour. after many prelonged meeting and the mounting costs and the fact the she was a war grave all further attempts to salvage the wreck were abandoned

Along with the USS Arizona, the USS Utah and her crew remain "on watch".

Aloha,
