Medic yokes

Thu Apr 14, 2011 05:28

Hi my name is Michael Phillips, I'm trying to find some pics of GI infantry men using medic yokes as combat suspenders. Any help is welcome, thank you.

I don't think the infantry men used them they used the m-1936 suspenders and the m-1944 suspenders, only the medics used them because of the extra weight on the bags holding there supplies.

I heard that infantry men them sometimes used for hook the B.A.R. munition belt on it , because these are packed heavy'er than an other munition belt and so it was more comortable to wear....
I can believe this statement, but like i said, i only heard this and i have no proof on pictures...

I think the fact that you're finding it difficult to find a picture should tell it own story. I'll trawl through my pictures and see if I can find anything for you.

Cheers!

There is a picture in the wonderful book from Pieter Oosterman-"M-1 helmet of the ww2 US GI",
of an Gi that wear a medical suspender with an B.A.R. belt hooked on it.... This is not an original picture, but a figured pose.. but i still believe i saw an original picture of the use of it.

Hello guys;

I found another nice picture of the use of medic suspenders by infantry men. This picture is taken in the pacific, on Iwo Jima. The two founded pictures are both from the pacific-theatre and i hope to find some day one in the ETO-theatre...

Interesting pics Pieter. The more you study history the more you realize you shouldn't say NEVER. Once you realize that the guys on the front line are fighting for their survival, it becomes obvious that there are lots of undocumented exceptions. Your example in this thread is non-medics wearing field medic yokes. You have documented your statement with the photos which is difficult to dispute.

I would also suggest that these are exceptions and not the norm. Using the Iwo Jima pic as an example, the guy in the bottom right is using medic yokes, the guy in the top left is wearing USMC suspenders, the guy with the patrol cap doesn't have any suspenders. I do not believe the wearing of medic yokes by non-medics was done at a unit level, but rather solely at an individual level. I would also point out the grunt with the yokes is wearing TWO cartridge belts rather than only one - not something I have seen anywhere else. Obviously we can say that it was dones by those that were there, but certainly was not a common practice.

Please keep the pics coming!

Hello everyone;

I found another intresting pic for this topic!
This time it is not the use of a medic yoke by rifle men;
but a medic (paratrooper), that wears an ammo belt- i am not sure about the type (garand belt or B.A.R. belt).
The picture is from the book "At the point of no return", by Michel De Trez. The picture is taken in Carentan.
