What was the function of the Air Force Clearing Station?

The type of unit which took prime responsibility for this role were the Aeromedical Evacuation Squadrons, which were not actually flying squadrons, but rather clinical units consisting of Medical Department personnel assigned for duty with the AAF. These provided much the same services as any other casualty clearing station, but included medical technicians and Flight Nurses who would normally provide in-flight care, as well as a rated Flight Surgeon or two who provided physician-level oversight and made the final determination with regard to whether a patient could be safely air transported. The aircraft and flight crews actually providing transport were drawn from any and all Air Transport, Troop Carrier and Liaison Squadrons who happened to be in the area.
